Members of the Dr. Schär Advisory Board
Dr. Schär has set up an advisory board consisting of experts in the field of coeliac disease, non-coeliac gluten sensitivity (NCGS) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) to promote the exchange of knowledge and best practice amongst the scientific community and raise awareness of gluten-related disorders.
Members of the advisory board include gastroenterologists, neurologists, paediatricians and specialist dietitians.
Bruno Bonaz - Gastroenterologist (FR)

Gerd Bouma - Gastroenterologist (NL)
Professor Gerd Bouma was trained as immunologist and physician at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. After obtaining his Medical Degree and PhD he worked for 4 years as a post-doctoral fellow in mucosal immunology in the laboratory of Dr Warren Strober at the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD, USA. Back in Amsterdam he specialized as a gastroenterologist and has been a staff member and scientist at the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology of the Vrije Universiteit medical center since 2009. His research focus is on inflammatory and autoimmune conditions of the gastrointestinal tract and liver, including inflammatory bowel disease, celiac disease and autoimmune hepatitis.
Gemma Castillejo - Gastroenterology paediatrician (ES)
After carrying out a residency in paediatrics at the Vall'Hebron Maternal and Infant Hospital, I trained in Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Paediatric Nutrition at the Sant Joan de Deu Hospital in Barcelona. I spent 1998 working as a gastroenterology paediatrician in the Sant Joan de Reus University Hospital.
I am currently a lecturer at the Rovira i Virgili University, and a member of the Spanish and European Society of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (SEGNHP y ESPGHAN), as well as a founding member of the Spanish Coeliac Disease Society (SEEC). My research since 2006 has been focused on coeliac disease. I have been involved in national and European studies, having contributions published in international journals and attending various conferences.

Carlo Catassi - Paediatrician (IT)
After graduating in medicine, Charles Catassi worked at first as a doctor in Ancona and then began his research and teaching as a researcher at the Polytechnic University of Marche. Here, in 2004, he became professor of pediatrics. Since 2003, Catassi also holds the position of visiting professor of pediatrics and co-director of the Research Center for Celiac Research at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (USA). For years Professor Catassi has conducted research in the field of coeliac disease, is responsible for activities in the fields of gastroenterology, nutrition and Auxology at the Pediatric Clinic of Ancona, and has assests in over 100 publications in various international journals.
Jernej Dolinsek - Paediatrician/Gastroenterologist (SLO)
Jernej Dolinsek is a physician from Slovenia who has been working as a paediatrician at the Maribor University Medical Center since 1996, and in 2008 took over management of the department. He specialises in paediatric gastroenterology and, in particular, coeliac condition. Besides various research activities which he also conducts in Finland, Jernej Dolinsek has written numerous papers and has spoken at the most prestigious Eastern European conferences on coeliac condition.
Luca Elli - Gastroenterologist (IT)
Doctor Luca Elli graduated in Medicine in 2000 at University of Milan and then graduated in Gastroenterology and Digestive Endoscopy in 2004 University of Udine. Later he obtained the title of Doctor in Gastroenterological Science (PhD) at the Department of Medical Sciences, University of Milan. Since 2004 he was first assistant and from 2011 he became head of the "Center for Prevention and Diagnosis of Celiac Disease" Fondazione IRCCS Cà Granda - Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico in Milan. He conducts clinical and endoscopic digestive practice with particular interest in the techniques of small bowel enteroscopy. He’s author of 40 scientific papers published in international scientific journals with IF.
Alessio Fasano - Professor of Paediatrics (USA)
Professor Fasano is Professor of Pediatrics and is also chair of Professor in Physiology and Medicine at the Medical School of the University of Maryland where he directs the Mucosal Biology Research Center and the Center for Celiac Research. Prof. Fasano has published more than 180 papers in international journals of high international prestige, and has invented 160 patents. Prof. Fasano is an elected member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation and has received many scientific awards for his pioneering work in the field of autoimmune diseases, including the' Innovator of the Year’ Award by the State of Maryland (2005), finalist for the Director's Pioneer Award from the National Institutes of Health (2005), Best Academic / Industry Collaboration Award from the Chamber of Commerce of Baltimore (2006), the Entepreneur of the Year Award by the University of Maryland (2007), America's Top Doctor's Award (2007), and Researcher of the Year Award by the University of Maryland (2009). Since 1995, his research was supported by the National Institute of Health without interruption.
Ute Körner - Nutritional expert in allergology (DE)
Since completing her studies in Nutritional Science at the University of Bonn (1988), Ute Körner has worked as a nutritional therapist, lecturer and journalist, as well as an author with a focus on the field of food allergies and intolerances, neurodermatitis and gastroenterology.
Ute Körner is a certified nutritional therapist and has been accredited as a “Nutritional expert in allergology” by the German Allergy and Asthma Institute (DAAB), as well as being a member of the research group “Dietetics in Allergology”. After six years of clinical experience, she is now self-employed and has her own practice in a surgery in Cologne.
She is also a regular guest lecturer at further education seminars and doctor training courses.

Ina Panneman - Dietitian (NL)
As an enthusiast food technologist (Bolsward, 1982) Ing. Ina Panneman started her career as a lecturer. Due to her long lasting experience as a product developer of bakery products and baking mixes for consumers, she became very familiar with product quality, exquisite taste and a high level of nutritional values. The properties of raw materials and the various consumer requirements made her very curious about new applications of ingredients and the preparation and use of dietetic products. This generated great interest in food allergies and intolerances.
After graduating as a dietitian (Groningen, 2001), Ina Panneman worked in a general hospital and in a home care organization as a dietitian and provided counselling on behalf of a patient organisation. In the meantime, she became a dietician specialist, working in her own independent and autonomous dietician practice. Among others, she concentrates on celiac disease, gluten sensitivity, allergies and food intolerances.

David S Sanders – NHS Consultant Gastroenterologist & Professor in Gastroenterology (UK)
NHS Consultant Gastroenterologist & Professor in Gastroenterology at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital & the University of Sheffield. His areas of research includes clinical disorders linked to coeliac disease, nutrition, endoscopy of the small intestine and irritable bowel syndrome. To date he has received more than £ 1.8 million funding for research. He has published 186 peer-reviewed articles, 84 of them original paper (the first of 42 authors). He co-authored the recent NICE clinical guidelines on recognition and assessment of coeliac disease and current British Society Gastroenterology (BSG) guidelines. As a result of his work in 2010 he was selected for the European Rising Star Award in Gastroenterology.
Michael Schumann - Gastroenterologist (DE)
After completing his medical training, Mainz physician Michael Schumann moved to the USA, where he carried out research at the gastroenterological department of the American National Institute of Health (NIH) as a visiting research fellow. Since 2003, Schumann has been working as a research associate at the clinic for gastroenterology, rheumatology and infectiology at the Benjamin Franklin campus of the Charité teaching hospital in Berlin. His field of research is gliadin and the epithelial barrier of the intestine.
Nick Trott – Specialist Gastroenterology Dietitian (UK)
Nick studied at the University of Wales Institute Cardiff where he obtained an Honours degree in Nutrition and Dietetics. Post under graduate training Nick has worked in a variety of clinical areas within the NHS including Critical Care, Oncology, Haematology, Renal medicine and as part of a Nutrition Support Team providing Parenteral Nutrition to patients receiving long term home intravenous feeding . During this time Nick completed post graduate PENG Clinical Update in nutritional support and worked with Leukemia Care to develop nutritional information for patients undergoing Bone Marrow Transplants. Currently Nick works as a Gastroenterology Dietitian, covering the Specialist Coeliac clinic at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital Sheffield. His areas of particular clinical interest include Coeliac Disease, Gluten Ataxia, Non Coeliac Gluten Sensitivity and the FODMAP’s approach to functional bowels disorders. He is presently involved in research into group education of the new diagnosed Coeliac population and the efficacy of the gluten free diet in Non Coeliac Gluten Sensitivity.
Marianne Williams - Specialist Gastroenterology Community Dietitian (UK)
Marianne Williams is a specialist IBS and allergy dietitian who works for Somerset Partnership NHS Trust. Her focus on innovation has led to the formation of a new professional role within the NHS, the ‘Specialist Gastroenterology Community Dietitian’, and the creation of the first UK ‘Dietetic-Led Primary Care Gastroenterology Clinic’. This fully funded award winning service has a 70% success rate using a range of specialist evidence based dietary interventions for adult patients with IBS and gastrointestinal allergy. The clinic is potentially saving considerable money for the NHS by preventing non-red flag IBS referrals to secondary care and by providing an effective alternative pathway for both primary and secondary care clinicians. The clinic won ‘Highly Commended’ in the 2012 UK Care Integration Awards, and ‘Service of the Year’ from the 2012 Nutrition and Health Awards. Marianne went on to receive ‘Dietitian of the Year’ and an ‘NHS Recognition Award’ for her work in this area. She sits on the Flexible Healthcare Gastroenterology Clinic Team in Somerset, is a Trustee of the IBS Network Charity, and is on the team revising the UK INS Professional Dietetic Guidelines.
