Members of the Dr. Schär Advisory Board
In the UK, Dr. Schär has set up an advisory board consisting of experts in the field of coeliac disease, non-coeliac gluten sensitivity (NCGS) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) to promote the exchange of knowledge and best practice amongst the scientific community and raise awareness of gluten-related disorders.
Members of the advisory board include gastroenterologists, neurologists, paediatricians and specialist dietitians.
David S Sanders – NHS Consultant Gastroenterologist & Professor in Gastroenterology
NHS Consultant Gastroenterologist & Professor in Gastroenterology at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital & the University of Sheffield. His areas of research includes clinical disorders linked to coeliac disease, nutrition, endoscopy of the small intestine and irritable bowel syndrome. To date he has received more than £ 1.8 million funding for research. He has published 186 peer-reviewed articles, 84 of them original paper (the first of 42 authors). He co-authored the recent NICE clinical guidelines on recognition and assessment of coeliac disease and current British Society Gastroenterology (BSG) guidelines. As a result of his work in 2010 he was selected for the European Rising Star Award in Gastroenterology.
Nick Trott – Specialist Gastroenterology Dietitian
Nick studied at the University of Wales Institute Cardiff where he obtained an Honours degree in Nutrition and Dietetics. Post under graduate training Nick has worked in a variety of clinical areas within the NHS including Critical Care, Oncology, Haematology, Renal medicine and as part of a Nutrition Support Team providing Parenteral Nutrition to patients receiving long term home intravenous feeding . During this time Nick completed post graduate PENG Clinical Update in nutritional support and worked with Leukemia Care to develop nutritional information for patients undergoing Bone Marrow Transplants. Currently Nick works as a Gastroenterology Dietitian, covering the Specialist Coeliac clinic at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital Sheffield. His areas of particular clinical interest include Coeliac Disease, Gluten Ataxia, Non Coeliac Gluten Sensitivity and the FODMAP’s approach to functional bowels disorders. He is presently involved in research into group education of the new diagnosed Coeliac population and the efficacy of the gluten free diet in Non Coeliac Gluten Sensitivity.
Marianne Williams - Specialist Gastroenterology Community Dietitian
Marianne Williams is a specialist IBS and allergy dietitian who works for Somerset Partnership NHS Trust. Her focus on innovation has led to the formation of a new professional role within the NHS, the ‘Specialist Gastroenterology Community Dietitian’, and the creation of the first UK ‘Dietetic-Led Primary Care Gastroenterology Clinic’. This fully funded award winning service has a 70% success rate using a range of specialist evidence based dietary interventions for adult patients with IBS and gastrointestinal allergy. The clinic is potentially saving considerable money for the NHS by preventing non-red flag IBS referrals to secondary care and by providing an effective alternative pathway for both primary and secondary care clinicians. The clinic won ‘Highly Commended’ in the 2012 UK Care Integration Awards, and ‘Service of the Year’ from the 2012 Nutrition and Health Awards. Marianne went on to receive ‘Dietitian of the Year’ and an ‘NHS Recognition Award’ for her work in this area. She sits on the Flexible Healthcare Gastroenterology Clinic Team in Somerset, is a Trustee of the IBS Network Charity, and is on the team revising the UK INS Professional Dietetic Guidelines.
