Department of Health and Social Care decides gluten-free staples should remain on prescription for coeliacs

The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) has decided that access to gluten-free breads and flour mixes on prescription should remain for those diagnosed with coeliac disease. The decision follows a national consultation which received almost 8,000 responses, the vast majority of which were from patients, carers or healthcare professionals involved in patient care.

Key Stakeholders & patients input to the DH Consultation on Gluten-Free Foods

A range of key stakeholders including Coeliac UK, British Dietetic Association (BDA), British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG), Primary Care Society of Gastroenterology (PCSG), pharmacy bodies, as well as patients themselves, have responded to the recent Department of Health (DH) consultation on the future of gluten-free prescribing in England. The stakeholders expressed concern at the proposals and support for the continued availability of staple gluten-free products on prescription.

DSI Award 2016 winner formally receives award and recognition in front of peers

Dr Yvonne Jeanes, Dietitian and Principal Lecturer at Roehampton University, gratefully collected her award in front of delegates attending the Sheffield Dietetic Gastro Symposium on 12th May 2017. The event attracted record attendance and provided a fitting crowd to hear more about Yvonne’s proposed research plans and how she will utilise the £8000 prize fund to conduct an intervention research study to improve adherence to a gluten-free diet amongst people with coeliac disease. News of the next DSI Award will be shared in January 2018 – watch this space!

Morrisons expand their gluten-free range

From Monday 1st February all Morrisons stores will be expanding their Free From range in store to provide customers with a much larger choice in gluten and wheat free food. Schar are a key part of this change and from February, 17 of our ambient lines and 7 of our frozen lines will be available in the majority of stores, meaning gluten-free shoppers will be able to pick up a large proportion of the Schar range all under one roof!

2015 DSI Award Winnder - Claire Constantinou

Winner of DSI Gastroenterology Project Award 2015 Announced!

We are delighted to announce that the winner of the inaugral Dr Schar Institute Gastroenterology Project Award is Claire Constantinou, Specialist Gastroenterology Dietitian from the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff. Claire will be working on a project to produce an educational video for newly diagnosed coeliac patients, providing timely expert dietetic support to this patient group. We hope to share news regarding Claire's progress during 2016.

Both the Dr Schar Insitute Professionals team and our independent expert judging panel were delighted with the quantity and quality of the submissions received for the 2015 DSI Gastro Award. We look forward to sharing news regarding the 2016 DSI Award early next year.
