Schär Roadshow comes to Coeliac Awareness Week

Coeliac disease affects 1% of the general population, however, only 24% of those with the condition are diagnosed.
This Coeliac Awareness Week, (8-14 May 2017) Schär is hosting its first ever roadshow to raise awareness of gluten-related conditions. The roadshow will give the public the opportunity to try a range of delicious gluten free products, find out more about gluten-related conditions and give local residents the chance to learn about coeliac disease and non-coeliac gluten sensitivity from expert dietitians.

The Schär roadshow will be visiting a number of different locations during the week. For those who feel they have symptoms related to gluten, an online assessment will be available to indicate if it is likely they have coeliac disease. A limited number of point-of-care screening tests* will also be available for those who meet specific eligibility criteria to check for the condition. Registered dietitians will be on hand to answer questions and provide dietary advice and further information about gluten-related conditions.

Schär will also be serving tasty gluten free sandwiches made with the delicious Schär gluten- free Panini Rolls. Free taster samples of the newest additions to the Schär range will also be on offer. Those  following a gluten-free diet will be given a money-off coupon for Schär products in the range, and can take away a handy ‘gluten free living’ booklet that features tips on how to lead a gluten-free lifestyle.

Coeliac disease is an autoimmune condition triggered by an intolerance to gluten. In the UK alone, the condition affects 1% of the population, however, less than a quarter of those believed to have the condition have been clinically diagnosed (1). Left untreated, coeliac disease can result in serious complications. In addition, 13% of the UK population could be living with non-coeliac gluten sensitivity (2). Symptoms are similar to coeliac disease but there are no associated coeliac antibodies or damage to the lining of the gut. Schär is recommending anyone who suspects they may have an issue with gluten to take action and seek advice this Coeliac Awareness Week

The first wave of the Schär roadshows will take place from 8-14th May at various supermarket locations. The roadshows will then continue to travel the country throughout the summer.
*PLEASE NOTE: For individuals who think they may have coeliac disease and wish to have a point-of-care screening test, they must first complete an online assessment. If the result of the online assessment indicates a point-of-care test is appropriate, and they are on a gluten-containing diet, a registered nurse will be on site to provide the point-of-care test. The online assessment and test will only be available to those aged 18 years or over and who meet specific eligibility criteria.
The point-of-care test is a validated screening test for coeliac disease and can only be undertaken by healthcare professionals.
