Quick Tips for Gluten Free Holidays

Happy Holiday
With the holidays in full swing, here are some tips for your gluten-free patients to follow to stay away from gluten and to prevent cross-contamination during this festive season
  • Prepack unperishable gluten free foods, such as fruits, nuts and seeds (except those made in a facility that also processes wheat), and any certified gluten free products such as fiber and protein bars, crackers, and even PB& J sandwiches.
  • Look up ahead of time if there are any gluten free options available at the airport, on your flight, and at your final destination. For example, United Airlines has a gluten free box for sale on board.
  • When eating out, make sure to always tell your waiter or waitress that you have celiac or gluten sensitivity, which means you eat gluten free not by choice but gluten actually makes you sick, and ask them to follow all cross contamination precautions whenever possible.
  • Discuss the same with your family and friends if they’re the ones cooking these holidays. You can always offer to bring your own gluten free food.
  • In case there are no gluten free options available, try to have something gluten free that’s nonperishable with you at all times (for ideas see bullet one).
  • Be careful with alcoholic drinks. Beer is out of question, unless it’s a gluten free beer. Hard apple ciders and wine are safe. Distilled alcohols are mostly safe. However, if you’re new to the gluten free diet or very sensitive, go for corn or potato based distilled alcohols. Skip alcoholic mixed drinks as there may be a hidden source of gluten.
  • When preparing your own gluten free meals for the holidays, use naturally gluten free foods or certified gluten free products. For example, you can buy gluten free stuffing or make your own from gluten free bread. You can also purchase gluten free pie crust or make your own using gluten free graham crackers. There is also a variety of gluten free cookies available in retail for your holiday dessert platter.
