Our body is home to an incredible number of bacteria in the digestive tract, the microbiome (formerly known as intestinal flora). The precise constellation of bacterial strains, their nature and relative numbers, varies from person to person and depends on genetics, type of birth, dietary habits and living environment.

Coeliac disease is a clinical chameleon – it appears in many different forms and is often missed. However, it is of worldwide importance. Recent studies have redrawn the global map of coeliac disease and revealed surprising results.

In this issue of the Forum we focus on the low FODMAP diet for the management of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).

For ten years now, Dr. Schär has been collaborating with its own Research and Development department, the R&D Centre in the AREA Science Park in Trieste. To mark this anniversary, Dr. Schär invited international scientists to a symposium at the end of 2013, to discuss current research and the gluten-free future.
