Are Schär Products Low FODMAP?

Woman pain
At Schär, we receive many inquiries about the FODMAP content of our gluten free products. FODMAP stands for fermentable oligo-, di-, and monosaccharides and polyols (sugar alcohols). When consumed FODMAPs are fermented by the bacterial flora in the gut, producing excess gas. This, in turn, may contribute to a group of symptoms known as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). These symptoms include chronic abdominal pain and diarrhea or constipation, or both.
Patients diagnosed with IBS must follow a low-FODMAP diet. Foods low in FODMAPs are recommend on this diet and foods high in FODMAPs are to be eliminated. All food groups must be considered when developing a low-FODMAP plan for your patients or clients, including vegetables, fruits, dairy and alternatives, grain products, protein sources (both plant and animal), and more.

Gluten free grains are recommended on the low-FODMAP diet. Although it is still unclear whether gluten (protein) and/or FODMAPs are the culprit in IBS, gluten-containing grains (wheat, barley, and rye) are to be excluded. Grains recommended on the low-FODMAP diet are naturally gluten free grains, such as quinoa, buckwheat, millet, corn, rice, and oats.
Oats are naturally gluten free, but often grown and processed along with wheat, barley, and rye. This is why gluten free certified oats are recommended on the gluten free diet.

Schär gluten free products that have been tested for low-FODMAP content include our Crisp Bread, Baguette, Italian Sticks, and our new Seeded Deli Style Bread to be launched in June. We also have a few products that have not been tested, but based on our initial ingredient analysis, may be recommended for those on the low-FODMAP diet (Italian Crostini, and Ciabatta rolls—white and multigrain).
